Leica D-Lux 4 and C-Lux 3
Pre-Photokina 2008: Leica has announced the D-Lux 4 and C-Lux 3 digital compact cameras. D-Lux 4 features a 1/1.63” CCD image sensor, 3.0”, 460,000 dot LCD monitor and a 24 to 60mm (equiv) lens. Compared to D-Lux-4, C-Lux 3 has a smaller 1/2.33” CCD sensor, 2.5”, 230,000 dots LCD monitor and zoom range of 24 to 125mm (equiv). Both include 50MB internal storage, support SD/SDHC storage and video recording.
The two cameras have already been launched as the Panasonic Lumix LX3 and FX37 respectively, with less subtle exteriors and different default parameters. They offer pixel densities of 24 MP/cm² and 36 MP/cm².
Evolution Of LEICA Digital Compact Cameras,
Including “Son Of M8”
LEICA D-LUX 4
A new fast lens, full 24mm wide angle, a hot-shoe and a range of accessories – just some of the features that justify this camera’s claim to be the “Son of M8”.
At full f / 2.0 aperture, the LEICA D-LUX 4 lens brings more creative possibilities with low light and depth of field into the sphere of compact photography. Equivalent to 24 to 60 mm in 35 mm format, the lens even provides an f / 2.8 aperture at full zoom. The lens design consists of eight elements, of which four are aspherical. These are matched individually to the camera sensor, working in harmony with the electronics and software to produce stunningly brilliant pictures in true to life colours.
The 1 / 1.63” sensor offering 10.1 mega pixel resolution is unusually large for this class of camera. This sensor size enables the camera to retain the full 24 mm wide angle. At 24 mm wide angle (35 mm format equivalent) the LEICA D-LUX 4 photographer is able to shoot wider travel and reportage photography, which is currently in vogue. Leica Camera AG has developed its own unique colour matching, contrast and picture definition profile which produces digital picture characteristics complimentary to Leica M film photography.
Data recording can be in Fine, Standard, RAW or combinations. The LEICA D-LUX 4 is also prepared for photos in HDTV format with a HD port for TV connection. The hot-shoe allows a 24 mm viewfinder accessory option and combined with an optional stylish leather “ever ready” style classic strapped case; this black camera definitely looks the part. Focus, shutter speed, stops and exposure override can all be set manually for real enthusiast appeal. A wide range of accessories will be launched to create a system camera experience.
“With the add-on accessories, the high speed optics and an intelligent operation concept, the LEICA D-LUX 4 is a real little system camera whose performance profile can definitely hold its own in comparison with DSLR” says Stefan Trippe, Vice President Production and Engineering at Leica Camera AG.
Available from October 2008, the LEICA D-LUX 4 is £590 (inc VAT) SRP.
LEICA C-LUX 3
An ultra fashionable, slim-line metal camera, the LECIA C-LUX 3, combined with its optional colour co-ordinated cases, just oozes style. Maybe it is the sexiest camera in the world? Not only does the LEICA C-LUX 3 look great but it allows for carefree high quality photography. The operation and function design concentrate on the real essentials. Owners can now capture more of those all decisive moments via innovative auto functions. This camera is about spontaneity, where users are not distracted by elaborate menus.
But, as you would expect from Leica, substance has not been forsaken merely for style. Compared to its predecessor there is a wider 25 mm “space grabbing” initial focal length, and a longer zoom up to 125 mm (both 35 mm format). With a very creditable f / 2.8 starting aperture and a 10 mega pixel sensor, this camera can really hold its own.
In addition, Leica Camera AG has developed its own unique colour matching, contrast and picture definition profile which produces digital picture characteristics complimentary to Leica M film photography. On auto, the camera combines many individual functions including O.I.S. image stabilization and improvement face recognition whereby focus and exposure values are automatically adjusted to the faces in the picture. With no preparation, a “grab shot” which was previously technically challenging, can now produce sharp, exposure compensated, images of people’s faces within a scene.
Available in black or white from October 2008, the LEICA C-LUX 3 is £420 (inc VAT) SRP.
