I watched Annie Hall again last weekend, and I have to say that if anyone can milk inhumane animal death for a laugh, it’s Woody Allen. The lobster/broom scene is hands down one of the most memorable scenes in a film packed to the gills with them. It’s hard to imagine the scene being shot today, with the lobsters’ fate in the hands of the unfortunately named CrustaStun, which, for lack of a less geeky analogy, is a bit like a Star Trek transporter to deliciousness, knocking the shellfish unconscious with 2 to 5 amps at 110 volts, then killing them with a current, thus preventing the crustacean screams that no doubt haunt the dreams of more than a few seafood restauranteurs. The product is available as a one-at-a-time lobster killer or continuous flow for shellfish processors, or you know, when you’re really, really hungry. Surely there are some morbid chuckles to be gleaned from this. Someone get Woody on the phone, because if he’s not interested, it looks like we’re going to have to wait for the next Jackass sequel.
