new cool best high technology gadgets gift Samsung XM neXusThere’s a disturbing trend out there in satellite radio land. It’s expensive MP3 players that connect to satellite radio docking stations. Here’s a new one from Samsung for XM Radio users.

The Samsung neXus player has just been introduced and is supposed to carry a price tag north of $300. That includes an XM home docking station, which you need because the neXus itself is NOT an XM receiver. No, it’s an MP3 recorder that allows the user to record XM programming and take it with them for playback at a more convenient time (or place). MP3 files and XM content can be mixed and users can even tag XM songs for purchase from the XM+Napster service.

The device will be available in two versions: The 1GB model will hold up to 50 hours of XM and the 512MB model will hold—surprise!—25 hours.

Both devices measure roughly 3.5″ tall x 2″ wide x .75″ deep and are supposed to be available later this year. I will try to confirm the price and update this post. But, if it’s anywhere near $300 bucks, the neXus will find itself on my “must skip” list this Christmas.

Why is this disturbing? Because this device seems to be a response to the trouble XM is having, if bad word-of-mouth is any indication, with its portable receivers (like the MyFi). The problems seem to revolve around antenna and reception issues. Perhaps, XM is throwing in the towel and the neXus is a way of telling customers they will have to settle for recording at home for playback on the road?
