This swimming robot was originaly introduced to us a few years back, AQUA using six flippers to paddle through water, and can even waddle its way across dry land.

So whats new for the six legged platypus?

A new computerized controller has been developed by a team from York’s Centre for Vision Research which now frees the AQUOS from he tyrannical cables and wires that once hindered its progression.

The AQUATablet is a water tight control that can dive down to 60-feet and give out commands visually underwater. After entering a command into the table-style device, a barcode-tag is displayed on the screen allowing the robot, which read barcode-tags via the onboard camera to carry out said orders.

Using a relatively thin connecting optical cable between controller and robot, divers can also control AQUA in real time simply by moving the AQUATablet, as its accelerometer translates movements into directional commands.

AQUA  was designed for collecting data in tight and/or hazardous areas, such as shipwrecks, saving human divers from having to do so. Although the controller is limited to a depth of 60 feet, the robot could proceed to operate another 30-40 feet deeper, allowing the operator to remain at a shallower, safer depth.
