So the first batch of 3DHD TVs is hitting the market, but is it really worth the price bump? You’ve heard the rumors, you’ve seen the glasses, but now its actually time to watch a movie on the Samsung 3D TV. With a 6,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ration, the picture quality looks spectacular, especially when you immerse yourself in 3D content.
Samsung seems to always have a leg up on the competition when it comes to design, even with added 3D functionality; I’d have to say it’s still incredibly sleek. All the inputs are cleverly built into the side, so you can wall mount it, which is very important. This TV is an unbelievably 1.1 inches thick and has a beautiful black and chrome finish. Although the legs look like something out of a 70′s Sci-Fi movie, they are removable, so I would suggest wall mounting it.
The Samsung 46″ 3D LED HDTV is one of the first 3D TV’s on the market, the questions being, does content actually look good in 3D? And is there enough content to warrant getting a new TV?
The main problem with 3D TV’s is something called cross talk, which means you are seeing a ‘ghost’ image of the second image along the edge of the first. This is what makes watching 3D on a TV difficult for a lot of people; it rarely looks like there is one singular image, especially when text is involved.
The shutter glasses are supposed to turn the ghost image into a single image, but it doesn’t do a very good job as you can still see a faint ghost or outline of the second image in the background. This is not a very enjoyable experience.
This TV had more pronounced crosstalk than some of the other sets that are currently available, which is not good. There are optimizing and viewpoint options to help make the 3D images clearer and Samsung has claimed that warming up the TV will make the images more vibrant , and it does. The only problem with this being it take about 30-45 minutes, can you imagine waiting for this long just before you watch a movie? I can’t.
Samsung did improve their web connected app store. The layout to the app store is very intuitive, and it looks like an actual app store on your computer. So far, everything is free, like Pandora, Voodoo, and Yahoo.
The 2D aspect of this TV is absolutely fantastic, the blacks are deep, the colors are vibrant and the amount of detail you can see incredible. It has a 240HZ smooth motion feature, which eliminates motion blur and this is something Samsung has been the best at.
Overall this is not the best 3D TV available, but it’s more than watchable. For a price tag of $2,300 I would certainly wait until more 3D content is available before I upgrade my TV.
