It’s amazing how people responsible for technology innovation makes things thinner, smaller and lighter when it comes to digital devices. A good example of that are laptops and mobile phones, I believe everybody has been a witness of how computing device nowadays gets shrunken as much as possible.
From 3-4kg laptops we now have 500-800 gram lappie’s available in the market. Same thing goes for mobile phones that used to be half an inch to 1 inch thick but now it’s down to one fourth of an inch. Makes me wonder if it does contribute a big change in our lives? Well some people may see this change very beneficial specially for those on the go and needs a computing device that is portable and light, but what if innovation goes beyond what you think is should be done?
Imagine a sim card as tiny as your finger nails? What’s your comment about that? If you think that having this innovation is plainly unbelievable (not to mention it wouldn’t be handy too since it’s so tiny) well so far it is now. Actually this technology has been used way back late 90’s. Micro-sim is widely used on power meters so I can’t say that this is something new. So now Apple will be bring the Micro-Sim fever on their new gadget iPad.
For those people who have been keeping up with the latest in the Gadget Industry then you should now that Apple has announced that their iPad will boost a Micro-Sim once it hits the market (actually iPad has already been infused with the said sim at the CES 2010).Though the micro-sim is half the size of the mini-sim the things it can do is triple of what it can do.
The Micro-Sim will have a Wi-Fi and 3G support infused in it (sounds complicated I know). No carrier in US has the sim (so where the heck did Apple get the one used at the CES?) but Apple said that all carriers are welcome to have their own micro-sim version and they can have it made from the same company who did the one they have. (how considerate of Apple)
So the question would be: Will iPad support a mini-sim too? The answer is a NO. The sim may be small but the power and connectivity it can provide is thrice more powerful than the Mini. You may want to check out these links to know more about the Micro-Sim and iPad.
