I was very disappointed about the unveiling of Apple’s 2010 toy, the iPad. It seems like such a waste of a new product and technology. What the iPad should’ve been in my opinion, is a full keyboardless laptop, not a keyboardless media hub. For people who say it is a keyboardless laptop, I wanna see how far you get with it’s memory.
There is nothing on the iPad that can’t be done elsewhere for cheaper, except the fact that it uploads in color. But even that, is it worth the money you will have to shell out for it? Let’s consider the first major group of potential buyers: Apple fans. Apple fans have got to be the most hardcore tech fans out their, as they are very passionate and dedicated to their Macs and other Apple products. That being said, what will make them go to an Apple store and pick up an iPad? They already have either an iMac or a Macbook, and probably the iPhone by now. If they already have a Macbook which isn’t too cumbersome in the first place, there is no need to have the tablet. iPhone owners certainly have no reason to buy the iPad, as they already have their iPhone on them all the time anyway. All of the apps available on the iPad are already at their fingetips at this moment. They can already view Safari, Mail, Youtube, New York Times, and play games. So what purpose would the iPad serve to them?

Apple finally announces iPad
If you respond to that question by answering: “You can use it as an e-reader”, then the iPad still doesn’t serve a purpose. iTunes will be adding a new channel to the service called “iBooks” which is where the customer will purchase their reading material. So if this is going to be added to iTunes, then anybody should be able to purchase a book no matter what device they are on, so again I ask, what’s the point?
Here is the potential buyer Apple is banking on, and thats the Apple newcomer. This person has nothing with the Apple brand on it, and is thinking of getting an e-reader. Well as stated before, there are other things that basically serve the same purpose as the iPad but at more consumer friendly costs. The Amazon Kindle goes for $259.99, and the Sony reader goes for $199.99 for the basic model. Especially in todays economy, even if someone is looking for a nifty e-reader gadget, chances are they will certainly not want to shell out the high prices of the iPad. That’s right, I called the prices high even though Apple claims they are low. $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for the 64GB model. Thats only with wi-fi mind you. If you want to have the AT&T 3G network thats another $130 you have to put out, plus more money to give to AT&T for the monthly service. Would you see an average consumer buying this in this day and age? For those prices, they are better off either buying the iPhone or the $999 Macbook.
Bottom line, I feel Apple fans have no reason to purchase the iPad, and the average consumer has many cheaper alternatives for an e-reader. But who am I to say? I am just one blogger.
