I recently had a chance to try out Samsung’s new NX10 digital camera. A friend of mine is a professional photographer and couldn’t stop praising how well this camera functioned.
The Samsung NX10 is a mirror less digital camera with easy to change lenses. The camera seems to be geared towards users needing a lightweight camera that takes crisp shots and comes with Digital SLR capabilities. DSLR takes a mechanical mirror system and a five-sided reflecting prism called a pentaprism, which then angles off a beam of light by 90 degrees. The light is then directed from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.
Somewhat larger and heavier than most compact designs the NX10 looks and feels like a small DSLR, this makes for a nice feel. Without the memory card or battery installed, the camera weight just over 12 ounces, but once you add the strap and lens kit to the equation the camera comes in at just under 30 ounces.
In addition to the interchangeable lenses, the NX10 has 3-inch AMOLED screen, built in flash, an electronic viewfinder and most importantly a generous 14.6 Megapixel Cmos sensor which can shoot 720p HD video.
On the right hand side of the camera sits the SD card slot, which is suited for both SD and SDHC. Located on the left side of the camera, is the USB/AV, an HDMI slot and the remote out ports.
A great feature included in the NX10 is the Smart Mode, which automatically adjusts to determine the scene you are set to shoot. This is especially handy for those of you who might be unfamiliar with the DSLR functions.
The 640 x 480 pixel electronic viewfinder shoots exceptionally well. The colors are vibrant and images very quite crisp, while the color setting (named Picture Wizard) was simple to use. The AMOLED display, which according to Samsung provides a higher contrast ratio than the regular LCD screen, displays the same 640 x 480 resolution. I found this to be true as the AMOLED screen looked clearer and brighter than my camera, which just had a regular LCD screen.
While I am not a professional photographer, I have to say this is one amazing camera. The NX10 produced brilliant pictures and comparable HD video, while packed with tons of features. Although there seems to be a lack/variety of lenses and accessories, Samsung will be delivering more of both in the future. Comparing other cameras in the same categories as the NX10, I can say that it is priced right at just under $700.00, but if you do some research, you can find it for as low as $599.00.
