A team of researchers at University of Michigan has been developing tiny generators that are capable of harvesting the daily kinetic energy occurring on our surrounding environment. The kinetic power could be harvested from every day traffic on the streets or bridges, walking by people or even machinery operating in factories. And believably they are many, so many other untapped kinetic energy that we could think of to generate more powers back for us.

So far, there have been three prototype of Parametric Frequency Increased Generators or PFIG developed by scientists, and the fourth one is coming still under development.

The first and second type are utilizing electromagnetic induction to convert energy, much like large-scale generators at power plants do.

The third type is the one using PFIG measures one cubic centimeter and utilizes piezoeletric material, a substance that produces a charge when it’s stressed.

And PFIG itself is useful to detect small devices such as wrist watches, pacemakers and wireless sensors. This small technology could also be used to monitor infrastructure health, such as building or bridges’ small cracks or for weak spots detection system to identify problems invisible to human eye.

The small sensors could be deployed and placed throughout public spaces or buildings to track environmental pollutants or monitor energy efficiency.

Imagine if one day, these kinetic energy could be stored and accumulated, could a small town or perhaps a city’s residents enjoy free kinetic energy recharge for their electric vehicles?  This would be great energy resource besides the solar, wind and ocean waves’ energies.
