An ‘uneggspected’ discovery by a team of scientists at the University of Calcutta has found the an unexpected material that capable to trap carbon from the atmosphere in the form of eggshells.

cool-fun-coolest-top-best-new-latest-high-technology-electronic-gadgets-gifts-idea-eggs The team expressed that the membrane that lines an eggshell is capable to absorb almost seven times its own weight of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, allowing the toxic gas to be stored until environmentally friendly methods of disposing, or even using it, could be obtained or discovered at a future date.

Furthermore, the team also explains about layers in an eggshell that consists of cuticle on the outer layer, a spongy calcium-containing middle layer and an inner layer.

The eggshell inner side’s second and third layers contains protein fibers bonded to calcium carbonate, a chemical compound that results from another carbon sequestration technology that is developed in India using naturally occurring bacteria.

The membrane, which is about 100 micrometers thick, is just below the shell and the team has demonstrated that a weak acid can be used to separate it from the shell for use as a carbon dioxide adsorbent.

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is a hot area of research in the effort to fight global warming through the process of removing carbon from the atmosphere and ferreting it away within carbon soaking materials.

Even though, presently, membrane and cuticle separation is not an efficient process, however, with India alone consuming 1.6 million metric tons of eggs each year and increasing, it is expected that by 2015, global egg consumption would reach approx. 1,154 billion.

However, in order to make the process viable on an industrial scale, a mechanical separation method would be needed. And until a viable method is found, it is advisable that people of the planet could all participate in helping to reduce CO2 levels by exposing the egg membranes to the air after eating our eggs.

The question is, how many people willing to expose the egg membranes to the air after eaten the eggs?
