Is fashion the key element that helps you through the day? You and another billion people, try to survive in the modern jungle by just focusing your early thoughts into style. Even so, during the day you might need some stimulant to finish the day without wanting to run away from the city, into a beautiful small town or village. Therefore, manufacturers are trying to offer more and more devices that are not only good, that don’t just offer excellent features, but that also look exquisite. What can you carry to your work? Your stylish laptop, fancy touch screen phone, nice wrist watch, and you’re almost done. But on your free time (if you have something close to a free time) what can you carry around you as a statement of your style credo?
Probably the correct answer would be the Sony’s excellent point and shoot camera with full touch screen display and almost no buttons, the Cyber Shot Digital Camera G3. You can’t imagine how great looking this digital camera is, until you keep it in your hands. Beside the looks, this camera also sports key features that are for sure high end features offered for an average price tag.
Therefore, you get Wi-Fi connectivity to share in real life your pictures either by sending them through email or posting them on special networking sites, and the excellent 3.5 inches extra fine LCD touch screen display. However, these features are just the beginning, and by margining all these ingredients, Sony successfully created a best seller. The Cyber Shot Digital Camera G3 sports an ultra slim design. With only 16.4 mm, this Cyber Shot camera is easy to take around anywhere you might go (easy to slip in any pocket without even feeling it). The DSC G3 is offered only in black. However, this is a good thing. The front of the DSC G3 sports a metallic black cover. You have to slide this cover from left to right in order to unveil the camera lenses.
The titanium cover has two engraved silver logos, “SONY” logo and “Cyber Shot” logo. On the back you will get a nice to touch and look at matte black plastic which feels by far cheap. Sony really invested time and money into refining every corner of this camera. You don’t really get buttons. Overall, maybe you will notice about three buttons, two keys and two switches. However, all these are smartly included and you can’t really notice them without trying really hard. The only switch that is logged is the Power switch. Overall, the design is not great, is excellent sports an excellent style and a flawless build quality.
The DSC G3 sports a 10.1 megapixel 1 / 2.3 type (7.70 mm) CCD image sensor. The specs for the lenses are quite impressive (which shouldn’t be a surprise for nobody since we are talking about Carl Zeiss optics). The Aperture range is either Auto or Program Auto, both with F3.5 – F10. The digital zoom is a smart zoom with the possibility of shutting it off. This optics also have included face detection feature, capable of detecting up to eight faces with four priorities, Auto, Child, Touch, and Adult. You get a 6.18 mm to 24.7 mm focal length, with a nine points focus. Sony also included a macro mode with auto macro, close focus enabled and macro on.
The optical zoom is enabled only at 4 xs, while in terms of speed depending on the pictures taken the shutter speed varies from ¼ to 1/1000. The total zoom enabled for this particular digital camera is almost 8x. The Carl Zeiss Vario – Tessar camera lenses are excellent. You may think that 10 megapixels are not enough, but in reality not the megapixels numbers matter but the specs behind them, the camera lenses features. The face detection features is almost common nowadays in good digital cameras. Besides detecting the faces, this feature will also control the focus, the flash, reduce the red-eye effect, and even control the white balance.
The eight face detection features sports the Intelligent Scene Recognition Mode name. This feature will easily integrated the proper settings once scanned the faces in the pictures (portrait, landscape, twilight simple, using a tripod, or even portrait, backlight and others). Beside the obvious Auto mode, this feature also enables the access to Advanced Mode which can reevaluate almost immediately the conditions for the next pictures. If you are planning to take snapshots, then you are in luck, this camera provides Optical Steady Shot feature.
This feature will enable you to take the best images you can even if the subject is moving, or if you are moving. Even more software features embedded in the DSC G3 are the Dynamic Range Optimizer feature, which will determine the best settings that must be applied for the current environment before taking the picture, and the Anti blink feature which will definitely remove any chance to get your photo subjects with their eyes closed. This feature will take two pictures and will keep the one without the blink and delete the other one. If you are a semi professional photographer then you will enjoy the semi manual focus which enables you to play a little bit with distances, but also helps you take the better pictures even in a manual mode (that is why they called it semi).
The DSC G3 sports a 3.5 inches LCD display with a maximum color rendering of 921000. This touch screen display offers good brightness, high contrast and excellent viewing angles. Not many digital cameras sport the same excellent touch screen display. In terms of settings, options, and sensitivity, this point and shot Sony camera provides eight ISO different settings, Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200. You also get four color modes, monochrome, sepia, normal, and vivid. The white balance is completed with enough profiles, auto, natural white fluorescent lighting, day white fluorescent lighting, white fluorescent lighting, daylight, cloudy, underwater, and many other more.
The Cyber Shot Digital Camera G3 sports a memory card reader, even if the onboard memory is about 4 GB (flash memory). The supported memory cards are Memory Stick Duo Media memory card, and Memory Stick Pro Duo Media memory card. Even so, the 4 GB internal memory should be enough for about 40.000 pictures taken in 640 x 480 resolutions, or 950 pictures taken in the best possible resolution. Besides taking excellent pictures, this digital camera can also record in several modes, 640 x 480 pixels with 30 frames per second, 640 x 480 pixels with 16.6 frames per second, and 320 x 240 pixels with 8.3 frames per second. Be warned, that a video record can’t have a length more than 10 minutes. As you can expect this camera is compatible with other Sony gadgets in order to improve at maximum the user’s experience.
Also, once you have taken the pictures you can edit them using 10 settings before showing them on your Bravia LCD. Also, keep all your pictures and videos locked with the password feature. If you get bored of the normal functions of you camera, just download from your computer some audio tracks and listen to them even through the built in speaker. This point and shot camera had both audio and video outputs, HDMI port (the 1080i) and the 2.0 USB high speed port. The DSC G3 is compatible with Windows 2000 Professional, XP Professional, XP Home, Windows Vista, and Mac Leopard and Snow Leopard.
The connectivity is ensured not only by the 2.0 USB port, and the HDMI port, but also by the inbuilt Wi-Fi with 802.11 b/g profile. Sony included in this camera a 680 mAh Lithium Ion battery, which should be enough for 5 hours to 6 hours of intensive use. Also, Sony included in the retail package beside the camera and battery, the battery charger, multi connector cable (for both AV and USB usage), CD Software, Paint Pen, and Wrist Strap. Overall, the DSC G3 is an excellent choice if you are looking for a great looking point and shoot camera with good solid features. The price is not at the bottom of the average line, but for $419.99, the Cyber Shot Digital Camera G3 is a true bargain for what it has to offer.
